4 months after SuperTuxKart 0.7.2, 128 tickets later and a truckload of changes, we are proud to present the latest and greatest version, SuperTuxKart 0.7.3. The big surprise is the very late-minute inclusion of the very beautiful Minigolf track by Mac, thanks for the contribution! • New Zen Garden track
  • New Subsea track
  • New Island battle arena
  • New Suzanne kart
  • New graphical effects

  • Improved bubble gum
  • See progression during Grand Prix
  • Improve physics for tall karts (e.g. Adiumy)
  • Lots of bug fixes
  • Improved kart control at high speeds
  • Better placement of rescued karts

  1. Can you please update the download page, then?
For me, it still points to 0.7.2a builds...

  6. Whoohooo!

You're awesome. I didn't expect that STK would make such a jump from 0.7.2 towards 0.7.3
The look&feel has improved a lot. Thanks for polishing the three strikes battle.
And you improved the jumping behaviour. Now items can be used in midair.
Not to mention that I love the challenge of the minigolf track. Zen Garden and Subsea are beautiful in their own & unique way.

STK has become quite polished. One can hardly believe that is has been built just by volunteers.

  7. one of the most promising open-source game in the linux world..I haven't tested the new version yet..but I'll do it soon..

I'm a closed-source game developer and I used to program 2D-phisics-related games but teoretical concepts are pretty much the same..so if I can suggest something I would like to point out a behavior its correction could lead to a good general improvement (expecially more fun ;D):

a better close combat dynamic: thing that frustates player is when your are side by side with an opponent and when he touches you in the right spot he can turn (rotate) your kart by a good amount of degree..while this is physically realistic it lowers the fun of the close combat with AI opponents (and in future real players)..

it should be changed in a way that you can give the opponents' karts just a lateral movement (you can translate the opponent kart but you can't turn his kart)..

that is why the good tactic to win in the actual state of the game is to totally avoid the contact with opponents..correcting the previously described behavior would make the game more interesting and fun (it is alredy but it can be improved)..

and this (IMHO) is critical to be fixed before any multiplayer version of the game happens..

if you agree with this guys (and if later I'll have the time) we can discuss it in the forum..

cheers and congratulation again for this new version of STK!!

  8. Adriani: online play is scheduled for version 0.9, and at this stage I would say that it is at least a year away.

Francesco: thanks a lot for your comments. We are aware of the physics shortcomings of STK. I have already started on 0.8 (see the Milestones page on our wiki), which will (hopefully) fix all physics issue. Besides the turning issue I sometimes see kart being 'glued' to each other as well. 0.8 will also include better skidding, and different physics properties for the karts. I would be glad of you could join us in the forum (or on irc).

  9. OMG it's now official!! Already?! Sorry 'bout that, I just didn't see the time coming, just like I lost two buses today T_T Guess I'm a little bit slower than everything else. Anyways, let me ask you this, right now I'm typing this on the other machine because my wife is getting addicted playing this game on MY own machine, which has STK installed. So it came t my mind, why don't you guys make this available to the cellphones? Maybe it's possible and it would even get popular quicker! If the answer is 'yes we can do that' would you guys assume to develop for which platform? Nokia's Symbian (S60v5)? Or is it already possible to run this game on this platform? Thanks for 0.7.3 it's very welcome here! Keep up the great work!! :)

  10. I need help. I want to update STK. I updated the svn sucsessfully with a terminar "co https://supertuxkart.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/supertuxkart/main/trunk supertuxkart". for installing normally you must tipp "svn switch https://supertuxkart.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/supertuxkart/main/trunk". my computer says "-C:\Users\Computer- ist keine Arbeitskopie" The - is the start and end. I have windos if that is important. PLEASE help me.

    Merci d'avance

  14. Anonymous:

To check out the SVN repository type this into a console (prompt/cmd) and return:
    svn co https://supertuxkart.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/supertuxkart/main/trunk supertuxkart

You can find the trunk content in the current directory after it has finished the task. You don't have to switch the branch because you already checked out the "trunk" branch.

    Hope this helps.

  15. Rodolfo: it is not easy to port STK to cell phones because they don't have enough CPU and RAM.

Anonymous : on Windows you can use TortoiseSVN instead of terminal. But really after the checkout you've done you have no need at all to run the switch command

Johann: regarde dans notre http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Media_Repo , toutes les sources sont la. Si tu veux juste les pistes qui ont ete retirees, regarde dans les add-ons.

  18. Me and my friends are loving this release! The new tracks are beautiful and the current kart roster is fantastic. I have trouble leaving the game!
I just have one problem with the game. It's the amount of times you get attacked by the rubber ball. If hit once, it isn't a problem. But once I got hit 4 Times in one race! It's this powerup that makes old mine frustrating and unplayable. I think the ball should have its strength reduced or the item should be less common. Despite this little gripe, STK is a Top-quality game :).

    ReplyDelete
  19. In one side, there are people like YOU who keep complaining about this rubber ball. On the other side there are people like everyone else who come here and they say "I think this game is boring because once I am in first place, nothing else happens and the end of the race is very predictable. I wish there is a way so the AI-chars find their way to battle for the first place against me...". So there is NOTHING wrong with the rubber ball I really didn't like it in the first place but I now find it funny when I'm leading and get hit. So please STK Dev Team, do NOT change this new feature! I just hope that there is a way to flee or dodge the ball.

@Auria, it's OK my dream is over. But once again, no way fot STK 2D to be available? =P

  20. Okay Okay, don't get so agressive! I was just saying. I only really find it a problem in the much harder maps in expert mode. But there should be a way to avoid it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'd like to thank the developers! You've done a very good funny racing game indeed! I hope some of my and my wife suggestions you'll find useful)
    New game modes:
1.Coop. of 2 players in a race. (several teams each of 2 players. Like in F1). You can have a friend or CPU as your partner against other teams.
    2. Escort. A VIP player with his teammates going on one side and other team just trying to prevent VIP to get quickly to the finish. Time of VIP is a time for all team. After a round teams change sides.
    3. Flag mode. One player starts first and leave 10 flags wherever he likes. The other starts in 10 seconds after the first and should collect all this flags. If missed get +2 sec. to the final time. Then they change sides. if second overtakes the first - he wins immediately.
    And some game play improvements:
    1. Winner of a last race(or overall leader) on the next race should start from the LAST place! (it's very easy to win if you a leader now...)
2.More hard conditions on expert level. (easy for children, normal for most players, expert for good players). May be CPU should have more speed..
3.On some tracks like Canyon, Fort Magma, etc CPU karts don't take nitros or acceleration so you can easily win - not good)
4.Driving skills should have more influence on a kart speed(going thru turns, extra moves, using brakes, etc)
And the last one - PLEASE make a video tutorial how to make tracks in Blender from the beginning to the race start. (it's not so easy for a beginner like me) Then you'll have many interesting tracks from users. It's like an art so game will only win from this!
Thank you for this game again! Sorry for my big message)

  24. For good players it is possible to send bowlingball(s) backwards to stop the rubberball just before it hits you.

I think the rubberball makes it more fun, because you can be in 7th place at last lap and still manage to win. And when we achieve network play, I guess it will be even more fun to use the swatter and the rubberball against my friends. It is fun to lose sometimes, ain't it?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am not against further tweaking the rubber ball, but indeed the idea was to prevent someone from being far ahead of the others. Note that there already is a possibility to avoid a ball but admittedly it's not too obvious nor easy

Regarding playing tracks in reverse mode, that's definitely something we will consider

  26. i have an idea: I think it would be cool to have an AI for battle mode. When will it come please.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes we want an AI for battle mode but I can't tell when it will come, sorry. We are only 2 developers

  28. Thank you for the game you've made! What do you think about changing the order of karts on starting line? Leader of standings could start from the last place (now you can run away from traffic and easy win)?

    ReplyDelete
  29. @last post: This is actually an option. go into the "Data" file, open up "stkconfig" (Wordpad works), and it's near the top. Also note, though, that it can be used to really hype up the karts! :P

  35. This game is great! Thanks to all the developers working on it.

    There are a couple annoyances.

    1. I HATE the rubber ball. In a game where you're trying to win with skill, this adds total randomness. It is really annoying to be doing some awesome driving, then get hit 4 times in a row by something you can't avoid - sent by drivers WAY behind you. Either you should be able to disable the rubber ball, or it should be easier to avoid or destroy. (maybe shooting bowling ball or cupcake behind automatically kills it if it's in visible range)

    2. Challenges should not be locked. At one point, I couldn't do any more challenges or unlock levels until I won a "follow the leader" challenge - and I hate "follow the leader". People shouldn't be forced to do challenges they hate just to play what they want to play.

    3. Zen Garden has major graphical corruption on my G5 PowerMac (but still playable) and Snow Peak crashes the Mac so badly that the only way to recover is to cut the power. (naturally, I avoid these levels - and hope they're not in some challenge that prevents me from unlocking other stuff)

Otherwise, this is one awesome game.

  36. @Developers,

What are the scheduled improvements for the next version? Thank you very much guys for your effort, STK couldn't get better without your dedicated love and work on it. Keep it up!

  37. Unfortunately there is no sign of progress yet on Debian, Launchpad or PlayDeb yet. Any idea when we might see deb packages of STK 0.7.3?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sorry for the late reply; we're usually quicker to respond on our forums.

The holdup in Debian packages for versions later than 0.7 is caused by STK depending on bug fixes and improvements in the Irrlicht engine. Thus we are using an unreleased version of Irrlicht for our static builds. However, using unreleased software versions goes against Debian's guidelines and the Debian package maintainer for STK therefore awaits for the next version of Irrlicht to be released.

We are not happy with this situation, but alas there's not much to do about it. Hopefully Irrlicht 1.8 will be released in time for SuperTuxKart 0.8, allowing for easier compilation and maintaining for users and packagers.
